Mudslinging & Politics

May you read this in the best of health.

And the battle has started! If all goes according to plan, this will be the 1st time all of Singapore's constituents will be contested since independence. And I am content with the quality of the opposing candidates; not just in terms of their academic background, but their work & engaging with society experiences, especially the part of volunteering before candidacy. Boy I wish I was home for this period of 'battle'.

Lest we forget, democracy means choice. Not just the choice of our representatives nor our government, but our path for the future. And the future always entwines  the younger generation; our children. In an economy that is driven by production and services, we sit precariously between success and failure. Our lack of natural resources means we don't have the economic cushion when other means go downhill. So our choice should partly be made on the basis of scrutinizing the policies of each party/candidate.

But do be mindful of the mind games, especially fear-mongering and false truth. As an example, political candidates can only conduct walkabouts under certain times and conditions. Don't be mislead if an accusation arose of candidates 'disappearing' after an election. The climate of invoking fear has always been a practice of global politics, and it does work- albeit if ignorance prevails. Never fall for such traps; make an effort to research the issue, and at the very least, a well-informed judgement puts society in good stead against falsehood.

Last but not least, I remind myself that providence is an issue for Allah alone, and none but Him is The Provider. Though we can chart a course of receiving this gift, let us not put this responsibility to something/someone else. Allah says,

"Isra [30] Sesungguhnya Tuhanmulah yang meluaskan rezeki bagi siapa yang Ia kehendaki, dan menyempitkannya. Sesungguhnya Ia Maha Mendalam Pengetahuan-Nya, lagi Maha Melihat akan hamba-hamba-Nya."

[Read: Isra:30 "Truly, your Lord enlarges the provision for whom He wills and straitens (for whom He wills). Verily, He is Ever All-Knower, All-Seer of His slaves (creations).]

Last week proved to be an eventful week. I had visitors from Sydney who requested the we visit a chocolate factory up in Adelaide Hills. I couldn't turn down the request-due to the chocolates. It was a quarter of an hour drive out of Adelaide, and the products did not disappoint.

Then there was this cleaning up at home with the guys on a Sunday morning.

And finally, the martial arts exhibition in the afternoon. Just my luck (or provision should I correct), won myself a prize in the lucky draw. A fish tank with all of its accessories awaits usage in my new abode, alhamdulillah.

PeAcE OuT!

  1. True, with the rumours saying they'll track you down if you vote for opposition. What the heck, there's nothing to fear, but Allah Himself.
