Unfailing loyalty; the trap of democracy among the impoverished
May you read this in the best of health, more so than ever now.
Thought I'd pen this short write-up. Been wanting to do so for a very long time, especially with what has happened to a few democracies these past few years.
Observe that in some nations, poverty has been successfully tackled. No nation can claim to have eradicated them completely, but many of the world's population has been brought out of destitution and empowered to participate in nation-building. I for once grew up in a country that turned first-world in a record time and have witnessed families who flourished in wealth and opportunities, given the right policies and mandate.
But for those still in the midst of their struggle, affording cash handouts evoke a certain kind of loyalty to their paymasters that sometime detriments democratic principles. Over the years nations have seen governments dishing out cash handouts but at the same time not living to their promises to alleviate the sufferings of the impoverished. Worst if corrupt practices are rift that ultimately keeps the lower class in their vicious cycle of destitution, unknown to the very people who help to elect these heads of states.
It is for this reason that cash handouts alone is not a barometer of an effective government. Assistance in the form of cash can come in many ways but the if afforded to the mass without specific reasons or objectives, should be constituted as bribery.
Discounting the stimulus or tax-reliefs that we are observing today due to financial stresses from the pandemic, democracies need to be ever vigilant to the penchant of gaining favourable responses through cash disbursement. A proper way to mandate a government is how it formulates and executes policies to assuage the poor.
