When agitated, rattled or nervy
Peace Be Upon You,
Just a few moments ago, my patience was tested by my toddler's antiques. I could have swore he behaved better (and stick to his usual routine) when at school than home. With time ticking away and work that needs to be done (work that I planned to perform while he sleeps), the heart rate went up, the mind had negative thoughts and the breathing was quicker and shallower.
If not for that thing called patience (Praise to God), the actions could have had a negative outcome.
Anxiety and anger are often entwined (but not always). The body will react physically and emotionally.
Physically - shallow and quick breathing, heart rate increases, the skin on the face may turn red (in extreme cases) and to top it off, the body starts shaking at the most extreme end
Emotionally - the mind races to extreme outcomes (often negative) which are unlikely to eventuate, fear takes over based on these far-fetched consequences, the emotion takes over and passes to our physical self
It is by no surprise that the above represents a cycle; mind->body->mind again. To stop this emotion is to break the vicious cycle either physically or mentally, although is it easier to start through a physical action.
Sitting down or lying down will calm the heart rate and deeper breathing will get you into a better state of mental relaxation. Breathing deeper entails the following,
1. Take a long, slow breadth through your nose
2. Fill the lungs from the bottom first to the top. The bottom of your sternum falls in deeper as you inhale further
3. Exhale through your lips (or nose) with almost all of the air inhaled cleared fro your airways.
4. Repeat the process till you have a firm grip of your body and mental thoughts.
The child is sleeping soundly as I type as a result of the actions above.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If any of you becomes angry and he is standing, let him sit down, so his anger will go away; if it does not go away, let him lie down."
